True for any mineral, including metal, probably. I'm not sure if the Moh's scale of hardness includes metals, but iron is harder than tin, which is harder than copper, which is harder than lead, which is WAY harder than Mercury. LOL. Mostly,though, the scratch test is for rock minerals, not metals or other non-rock type substances.

Hi. False for metals. Hardness is measured using a round probe and measuring how far it penetrates. Minerals http://www.minerals.net/resource/property/hardness.htm ARE measured using other minerals to scratch them. You're measuring one against the other, not 'how easily' since you do not measure force.
