a = -4

12a-14a = -2a

Then you get -2a = 8.
Divide both sides by -2.

a = -4 is the answer.

And I like to show how I get it and not just show you the answer. This is about LEARNING, not COPYING. So I hope you learned something. =)

I assume that since you're asking this, you would like an explanation instead of just an answer, so here goes:
12a + -14a is the same as 12a -14a. If you don't understand why this is, think about it this way:
1 plus a negative 2 (or -2 + 1) equals -1. 1 minus 2 also equals negative 1. See?
Okay, so 12a - 14a is a simple math equation.
12 - 14 = -2, so -2a = 8.
Now, you can divide both sides by -2, so you have a = -4.
Hope this helps!

12a + (-14a) = 8
simplify
12a - 14a = 8
combine likes
12-14 = -2 giving you:
-2a=8
divide both sides by -2 to get a to stand alone
-2a/-2 = 8/-2
simplify
a=-4

Check answer by plugging found value of a into original equation.

12(-4) + -14(-4)=8
-48 + 56 =8
reorder and simplify
56-48 = 8
8 = 8
the above is true, therefore your found value of a is correct.

Good luck with your homework, Hun!

a= -4
First combine like terms,12a+ -14a= -2a

Then to get a by itself you have to divide -2a by -2 giving you just a

But what you do on one side of the equals sign you have to do to the other side, so you divide 8 by -2

thus giving you a = -4

hope this helps
