i have a bt home hub and to be honest i arnt keen on the speed but i have seen modems and routers in shops and online and they say they are hign speed will they improve my connection speed

No what you recieve from your ISP's Modem is what your speed will be. Adding additional hardware historiclly can slow things a bit but never speed things up.
Google Internet connection speed.
There are several and check for free.

Normally the modems speed far exceeds what your internet provider is willing to give you. You want to upgrade your internet plan if you want faster internet.
