it's 11. That's the first thing that comes to mind because I learned that it is 11.... if you are working in a base 3 system instead of a base 10 system :) (base 3 means you only have the digits 0,1,2 instead of 0-9 (base 10) to work with).
so how does it = 11 you say? glad you asked! :)
in a base 10... after you run out of digits you start over right? so after 9, you go back to 1 and just put a 0 after it (so 10 comes after 9)... the same thing is true in a base 3.
so in a base 3 the progression would go
0,1,2,10,11,12,20,21,22,100 and so on and so forth
2+2= four whole values. and the forth whole value in this progression is
11 :) (0 is not a whole value)
I know.. I know.. I'm a dork :P

2+2=5. Unless the answer is surprising or unusual why ask the question? So I think of an unusual answer.

2+2 is more than a math problem.
It's a symbol of simplicity for most adults... a symbol of knowledge. Like the first person said, it seems ridiculous to even ask... but that's because he/she feels too smart to be bothered. It's a symbol of how far we've come in our pursuit of knowledge.

It reminds me of my old kindergarden teacher. She went to the hospital that year to get a tumor removed. She wasn't there the rest of that year. Never saw her again.
