Well that's a fabulous topic.
In my experience, it is one thing to give, and another to give gladly.
It is very difficult to make an individual feel valuable by putting them up in a huge house, with five cars and a pool.
The fact is that if the sincerity in your sharing is not there, which happens to be the case with developed countries, then it's nothing more than charity.
Do you know how much pride one has to swallow to accept charity?? And yet we make it about charity.
In my opinion, the rich are thieves, because they hoard. Nevermind getting into the history of how the rich countries got so rich!! I need not go there, most people know it.
the bottom line is that that have been and still somewhat continue to be oppressed, and there is nothing harder in the world than rising up from such a foundation. The human spirit is fragile.
Throwing money their way, on it's own, is not the way to do it. Past attempts have failed, and so few comprehend the reasons why.
p.s.- to all those who blame corrupt governments, why is it that the U.S. condemns and overtakes socialist (even democratic) governments that could make serious progress in some third world countries?? case in point- Haiti.
Don't talk about corrupt governments unless you intend to start with yours.

Who is the implicit "we" here? The industrialized countries in general? I suppose we could work on literacy at home, so that English speaking folks wouldn't have to encounter the non-word "alot" a lot. But some might think me a wise a@@ were I to propose such a thing.
As for Africa, I believe the Reverend Jackson had it right some years ago. The solution to its problems is "trade, not aid."

You qualify and answer your own question:
"Money" of itself is a medium of exchange. What it purchases is farm training, farmer training, farm land, etc.
Hence, "throwing money at" 3rd world situations is too general. It has to be effectively used.
Thus, the giving ought be focused into areas where good stewardship, respect for property, and others, occurs.
Fair enough?

I have a gf in Africa who needed to update her Passport and they told her that she needed to send the money upfront. Well once Canada received her papers, they asked how she was going to pay but she had already given all the money she had to the African govt (don't remember what country)...so they obviously kept it. She is stuck there now. No one is allowed here in Canada to go and pay it for her, it has to come from her for some reason?!
So, we can't just send money (I wish we could). There is a system we must find out about in order to get the money to the people.

The problem is money can't solve all of the problems most of these countries have. You have to take a hold of the bad people the terrorist killing and stealing from everyone before the money would do any good. Many charities give in all of those countries however the money won't solve all of their issues.

ive wondered the same thing.
first of all, charities try to do that
second, if we were to just send a huge sum of money, either the leaders of the country or a terrorist type group would take it and use it for the wrong purposes. the governments in 3rd world countries tend to be corrupt

In case you haven't noticed all of the violence, crime, AIDS, and corruption going on in Africa, the monkeys are running the zoo. Sending money to them without imposing the rule of law and morality is a total waste. None of this would have happened if England and France had the guts to stick with their colonies.

We have sent billions of dollars to other countries, and what do you think happens to the dough? The government of that particular nation takes it, and the people never see one dime of it. Those nations are run by corrupt governments who use a lot of the resources we send for war weapons, for their own pleasure, and other self-interest endeavors. Those governments don't care about the people, they just want them to be subservient, and certainly don't want them to be educated lest they find out the truth.
