I don't know who wrote it or who sang it.. I don't even know the name of it. Here are some of the words. I'm putting it here because it's old and I've always had luck here before.. OK here goes...... "Well it went zip when it ran, pop when it stopped, whirr when it stood still! I didn't know just what it was and I guess I never will!" I'm 67 and I remember it... If you do, tell me about it. I'd like the lyrics again. Thanks

#20 THE MARVELOUS TOY
When I was just a wee little lad,
Full of health and joy,
My father homeward came one night
And gave to me a toy.
A wonder to behold it was With many colors bright
And the moment I laid eyes on it,
It became my heart’s delight.

Refrain:
It went zip when it moved and pop when it stopped,
Whirrr when it stood still
I never knew just what it was and I guess I never will.

The first time that I picked it up I had a big surprise
Cause right on the bottom were two big buttons
That looked like big green eyes
I first pushed one and then the other,
Then I twisted it’s lid
And when I set it down again, here is what it did:

(refrain)
It first marched left, and then marched right
And then marched under a chair
And when I looked where it had gone
It wasn’t even there
I started to cry, but my daddy laughed
’cause he knew that I would find,
When I turned around my marvelous toy
Would be chugging from behind.
(refrain)
The years have gone by too quickly it seems,
I have my own little boy
And yesterday I gave to him
My marvelous little toy:
His eyes nearly popped right out of his head
And he gave a squeal of glee!
Neither one of us knows just what it is
But he loves it just like me!

My favorite song (right now) is Hole In My Pocket by Sheryl Crow You can tell me the world is round and I'll prove to you it's square You can keep your feet on the ground, but I'll be walking on air You're pretty good at waiting While I go running around Well, that's just the way it is, you know I got a hole in my pocket You give me love and I drop it I guess I threw it away I got a hole in my pocket You give me love and I drop it I guess I'll throw it away I got a four leaf clover I'll throw it over my shoulder I'm gonna need it someday o When things don't go right you lead me Torn up and tied---you free me When life is strange you take me Through every change, you never break me You got a feeling there's a wall that you can never climb I try to be there where you are, I try to be on time But I lose my way oops... almost the whole song... they are my favorite parts, though. I guess I like the whole song.

I loved that song, written by Tom Paxton, recorded by John Denver, also Peter Paul and Mary. I've been looking for it for years, just recently found that out. It is on their album Peter Paul and Mommy. I remember hearing it on John Denver's TV show years and years ago.
