Well actually there isn't something like that when it comes to Greeks,i mean we don't have the restrictions some other cultures have(like Muslims who aren't allowed to eat pork,or Indians who don't eat cattle) but there are some periods in the year(like the 40 days before Easter, the 15 first days of August and others) when, according to the Greek Orthodox church, you must fast in order to cleanse the body before the big celebrations on those days. While fasting you aren't supposed to eat meat and dairy products, fish and at some days you aren't supposed to eat olive oil.
Also according to the Greek Orthodox church Wednesday and Friday are days where you aren't supposed to eat meat(throughout the year).
But to tell you the truth I don't know many people who do that traditional fasting, except maybe older people in traditional villages. The younger generation(and by younger I do not only mean my generation but also my father's generation who is in his 50s) doesn't follow those traditional rules so much :)
Edit @ Vergina:No snails?I don't know about other parts of the country but on Crete snails are considered a very common dish.Xoxlioi boubouristoi is one of Crete's most famous dishes!!LOL

Some countries eat insects, lizzards, snakes and even dogs and cats. Greeks dont have these in their diets.

Greeks don't insects or snakes - not because they are sacred or something, they are just considered disgusting.
