They loooove corn. A local farm supply/rural store should also have things like Deere Cocaine, and some other cheesily named deer supplements. They are chock full of molasses, deer love it.

While deer eat flowers, mushrooms, leaves, fruits and vegetables, people will often put out other natural food in states where true Winter occurs. Deer eat various things in the different seasons. Here in Ohio when it gets cold you can see deer eating the last of the green leaves on bushes, ivy and trees even in December. They will eat seeds and acorns in Fall and early Winter that are left on the ground. In Winter they eat what they can find. So, aside from the more expensive fruits and vegetables, alot of people buy large bags of Sunflower Seeds for both the deer and the birds that come in their yard. My parents did that for years. However, they put a seperate feeder on the ground for the deer made of something with weight to it. They used a large clay bottom that goes under a big clay pot. They originally did this because the deer would stand on their hind legs and lean on the top of the feeder while eating the seeds. The feeder is on a pole five feet off the ground. Obviously, squirrels are not the only animal you have to keep off the bird feeder. This shows how desperate the deer are getting. Large bags of Sunflower Seeds last a while and can be bought many places. They are not expensive. The deer will first try them and then get use to eating the seeds. They will come looking in your yard once they know you put the seeds out on a regular basis. After a while, they will watch for you and come closer knowing that you won't hurt them. Remember to put seeds on a bird feeder as well or the birds will eat alot of the seeds during the day. Though deer will eat in early morning and early evening, they often feed later at night in Winter when they know people put food out for them. I took photos of deer eating seeds late at night in December and January.

If for you personal viewing to attract deer they do like sweet grain (or oats will work as well )and a 50lb salt block, it will take them a while to eat both. But watch out , once they do , it will be a regular and expected thing for you to do. They can go through that 50 lbs salt block in a week after they start eating it,
Most states it is only illegal to feed them, if you are trying to lure them in for the kill. If so shame on you.

I had several i would feed. I kept their grain in a metal trash can and would just tap the top when it was time to eat and they would come running up and wait.

Of course make sure their is also so water source out there for them.
They will become very dependant on you feeding them so make sure it is something you want to continue to do as they will depend on it and will bring their young there as well.

Are you going to kill them? Never mind, I do not want to know. People in this area put out corn for the deer and this time of the year, also grow food plots. The food plots consist of oats, wheat, rape, and rye grass. The fresh green really attracts the deer when everything else to eat is brown.

There is deer corn which is sold at many of the hardware stores and co-ops. I have even seen it at some Wal-Marts.

My Mother-in-Law will throw out whole apples just before company comes for the holidays near the Taho area, also corn is something they like. Or you could try using a lamb oat mix. its healthy, and they process it about the same.

You should check and make sure whatever you are going to do is legal. Might get in a bit of a jam if it isnt.
