Star Trek and Star Wars both deserve legendary film and science-fiction status, reverently revered and respected in modern society's pop culture. Both were--and still are--way ahead of their time:

Star Trek: The original series was taken for granted by 1960s TV audiences and lived only two years. Cancelled and given limbo life in syndication, Star Trek harvested an ever growing fan base of Trekkies--who saw and appreciated the complex facets imagined by former LA cop Gene Roddenberry.

Star Trek brought us a world where political dynamics aside, we saw possibilities where people of all races, lifestyle and cultures could find some degree of harmony; much like what society undergoes today.

Some of the whiz-bang Star Trek hardware, thought impossible back in the 60s, exists today: Hospital beds that allow doctors a patient's instant vital life sign readings, computers that operate on voice command recognition, computers that operate on "universal language translation" programs. That cool Tricorder communicator sure looks like today's RAZR V3 cellphone. All that is left is to figure out how to create space travel engines that run on infinite energy and the biggie: people teleportation--which might take a while.

Star Wars: Shattered those cheesy B-movie sci-fi film special effects w/ very realistic film imagery. Audiences were immersed into a totally radical new universe, where the battle between good and evil was interwoven with complex political dynamics and wars carrying (for both sides) tragic sacrifices. And in between, the Star Wars universe has grown into a behemoth sized one--w/ no end in sight.

Modern audiences, from the 70s on through today, can watch the Star Wars series (which took nearly 30 years to complete) and feel the rush our grand parents did when they saw those vintage Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon movie serial films.

Star Trek and Star Wars are not only historically epic TV and film productions--they both will far outlive our lifetimes to be revered and enjoyed by the generations beyond our grand children.

It's kind of an apples an oranges question.

Star Trek was more about exploration and the politics and science of humans exploring the universe.

Star Wars was more about a specific conflict and the heroes and villains therein.

I can watch old episodes of Star Trek TNG way more often than I can watch an entire Star Wars film.

As realistic as Star Trek was, Star Wars was IT. When Star Wars came out it was the only of its type, with the special features and action. Because of this hit it became one of the movie legends. As popular as Star Trek was, it was probably just as good. Depending on who you are asking. People like both. For different reasons, whether they like Star Wars for Han Solo, or like Star Trek for Captain Kurk.

Comparing Star Trek to Star Wars is like comparing Disneyland to a Six Flags amusement park--both are great--it just depends on what you like.
Star Trek is like an experience--whereas Star Wars is like a thrill ride.

Star Trek was about adventures, peaceful and otherwise. It was an anthology in space-travel. For instance, "The Trouble With Tribbles" (ST) was purely comedic. Several episodes in each series were romantic in nature. Some were murder mysteries (e.g. ST: "Wolf in the Fold".) Some were character studies (ST: "Galileo 7" and "Amok Time" for Spock, "For The World Is Hollow And I Have Touched The Sky" for Dr. McCoy, "Turnabout Intruder" for Kirk.)

Star Wars is a single-themed epic regarding the rise and fall of an evil empire as seen through the eyes of a man and his children. (Anakin being the boy/man; you figure out the children.)

So it is an apples-and-oranges mish-mosh of a question. The two are different classes of work and a comparison becomes radically difficult, despite the apparent common theme in so many of the ST episodes.

Want to blow your mind regarding ST? If you get a chance, watch "Forbidden Planet." Watch the ship orbit Altair 4. When it is time to explore, who goes out? Captain, First Officer, Doctor. The deceleration stations look awfully much like transporters, though they serve a totally different purpose. And the ultimate conflict in FP - like many of the ST series - is internal.

Star wars, Star trek is basically "too clean" there's no oil, grease etc. One line I heard said in an episode of star trek was "we no longer work for pay, the advancement of mankind is our reward", yeah right. At least han solo was initially in it for the money!

in the 1980s and 1990s I Iiked Star Trek because Gene Roddenbery was still in charge. And ever since Michael Okuda and Rick Berman took over I feel that they weren't as good as Gene was. So in the mid 1990s I started to like Star Wars more because George Lucas was still in charge of it.
