Why there are so many used 2004 and up BMW 3 and 5 series out there? Were they bad cars so people don't bother to keep?

Many are end of lease vehicles that go directly to the BMW FSA and sold as CPO. However, most people know BMW's older than 2-3 years are very unreliable and very costly to maintain- even BMW is giving up the free maintenance plan starting Jan 2008 as costs have risen, profit margins are being eroded by the exchange rates and they are forced to lower quality even further. Electronic problems are the most common. Avoid used BMWs and save yourself a headache.

It is all a metter of personal taste. Although the designs of the bmw have been slated, to some it is asthetically pleasing. The design idea has emphasis on the armour like body and the style is bmw's way of trying to be different. it is arguable that the m5 looks a mean piece of kit, aggressive styling is very dominant and a plus. the 6 series looks good whereas the new 3 series coupe looks very mature and sofisticated. I do agree less sporty options of certain models make it ugly but the top end models do look good, even the 3 series with the larger wheels

A lot of 2004 BMW 3 Series and 5 Series are out there now because peoples 3 year leases on those vehicles are up and most people turn them in and re-lease the latest BMW models.(2007's or 2008's) The dealers then turn around and sell those 2004 leased vehicles on their lots as Certified Pre-driven cars. In 2004 BMW was offering a lot of lease deals with not so much money down and relatively low lease so it was popular car with a lot of 30 somethings. They are good cars in fact they are excellent cars and buying a certified pre-driven BMW is a good idea. The certified cars usually come with a warranty good for a year or two. I hope my answer helps. Take care and Happy Holidays.

They are very popular cars, they're cheaper to run, service and maintain than Mercedes Benz vehicles. They are also very reliable, which makes them in more demand. In the UK, the 3 series is in the top 5 most popular car list.

1. Vauxhall Vectra
2. Vauxhall Astra
3. Ford Mondeo
4. Bmw 3-series
5. Honda Civic

The 5-series is quite popular, its a better equivalent to the Mercedes E-Class, i'd say.
