I am doing an anthology and I need to include a short story in my unit of authors from New England. The story can be about anything having to do with freedom, and can be from any time period, point of view, etc. Thank you so much!

See if you can't find some of Fritz Wetherbee's books. Wetherbee was born and raised in New Hampshire, lives in the state, and has a segment all to himself on the show New Hampshire Chronicle in which he tells what's supposed to be a real story about a person, place, or thing that has something to do with the state. In his book "I'll Tell You the Story," one of the stories is about who supposedly fired the first shot, the famous "Shot Heard Round the World," at Lexington that started the Battle of Lexington and Concord.

I would suggest reading "A New England Nun", by Mary Wilkins Freeman. It's about a personal kind of freedom. A woman who is engaged to a man who has been gone a long time regrets her decision, as she has grown to like her independent life. You must read Freeman's "The Revolt of Mother", too.
