A few years ago where I live, a guy went to our mall and opened fire the day before Valentine's Day. He couldn't handle depression and he was obviously troubled with of personal problems and unrequited love. He opened fire in the mall and was eventually tackled by some bystanders and held until the cops moved in on him, and the cops put the mall and parking lot on lockdown for 3 hours - Nobody could enter OR exit there. I think the media plays a smaller role in these things. The main cause of these things is the nature of people, their ability to cope with problems, how others treat them, upbringing, and their environment....People do not commit these crimes because they feel enticed by the media. If people can't handle their mental problems and are made to feel and believe they are worthless or unimprtant and ridiculed or mistreated, they will believe it, and become violent, sociopathic people. People write suicide letters boasting of being famous or rememered only because they felt unloved and unimportant, and they figure that even a horrible exit will change that. But you cannot give ALL the blame to the media. The media is nothing more than an outlet. You cannot blame the guns. A weapon is not as dangerous as the shooter. Take away guns and we still have troubled, dangerous people who will find other means of killing. The REAL problem is how human beings treat each other and the mentality of some of those who get stepped on. When people stop treating human beings so callously, we might just have less of these rampages....Since there is no actual evidence that the media had motivated him to commit the crime, a lawsuit against the media would not be possible. If you tried doing that, you'd also have to go after those who helped to create the killer....Being famous is not really what these people wanted - they wanted to feel loved and wanted. When they didn't get that, they tried grabbing at being infamous....I wish I could have talked to him and let him know his life was worth something. I feel bad for him as well as those victims.

Out of the first 5 news pieces this evening on our local NBC channel 4 were about shootings. Don't they ever give GOOD news? We had a group of Gold Star wives/dad and their kids get a free trip to Anaheim, California last week (among the things they did was a whole day in Disney Land) There were about 1300 people from around the U.S. American Airlines provided the transportation. There was TV/newspaper coverage of them leaving. Our group, the Patriot Guard Riders were there to help with the luggage (we even got to go through security and on the walk way from the building to the plane...had to have our names in advance)(see the guys with the flags? PGR in Nashville) and keep the kids occupied while waiting for the flight. HOWEVER, when they came back Monday night, NOT ONE MEDIA was there! I blasted our NBC affiliate for that and said, "I guess no one was there because NO ONE WAS SHOT!" The PGR was there again to help with the luggage and keep an eye on the kids while the moms (and one dad) went to get their cars.
Sorry that wasn't JUST about your question, but I just felt I had to share this great organization with you, and those reading this. OPERATION SNOWBALL EXPRESS.

The first thing I do when I get home is put on CNN and there it was . My heart goes out to the families who have been affected by this, including the shooters family. It's as if the whole world is slowly going mad. What a terrible tragedy.

Yes it is a terrible tragedy we aren't safe anymore first its schools and colleges and omish schools now malls. Hearing things like this gets me heated how can one person do such a thing no respect for hummanity what so ever. When will this be put to a stop is bad enough they have suicide overseas but we have this one person can massacure people because they have issues. How is president bush taking care overseas country before his own state?

Our prayers are with those who lost loved ones.

Those who do such an act are posessed with demons it just shows you who are the stronger ones against the devil, lucifier and his demons.

The official identified the gunman as Robert A. Hawkins, age 19 or 20.

Yes, why is that some people that want to commit suicide, decide that they have to take other people out with them. What misery loves company. My heart goes out to his family and the other family's of those killed or injured. Please say "I love you to those you care about every day, if possible, you just never know when it will be the last.
PS. Be sure to watch this Sunday 12/9 "For just one more day", the movie from the book by Mitch Albom. (Evenings with Morey fame) it's a Hallmark movie . It also was directed by Oprah Winfrey. Bring Kleenex!!!!!

I hadn't heard. Thanks for the info... I'm on my way to CNN now to find out more. I just don't understand why people do this kind of thing.

Edit: That sounds so much like the shootings that happened here in Utah at Trolley Square not too long ago. Sad.

All I think of is what a loser this 19 year was. No job, a dropout. He said he wanted to be remembered. What as a LOSER? Then the coward shoots himself. Those poor people and their families. The unnecessary pain and anquish. Hope there is a hell and hes in it.
