Mucus is the best and most reliable sign. Fertile mucus is clear and stretchy or opaque and runny. Less fertile mucus (before and after ovulation) is sticky and sparse and could be white or yellowish.
Taking your basal temperature is useful however it does NOT tell you that you are ovulating, as some believe. Your temperature only shifts (goes up) AFTER you ovulate, so it's useful as a confirmation sign only.
However, some women who track their cycles find that there are other indicators that they are ovulating like: cramping or tenderness/pain in the lower abdomen, increased libido, increased appetite, and faint spotting.

There are ovulation predictor kits in the store. You should be ovulating between the 10 & 14th day after the first day of your last menstural period. Normal cycles are around 28 days. Mark on the calendar from now on the first day of your period. After a month or 2 you should be able to see what your cycle is (if it's regular). Then get a kit if you don't get pregnant & do the testing. Otherwise, there's no real way to know that you're ovulating other than the methods you've already mentioned.

There are a number of ways a woman can try to detect when she is ovulating; however the accuracy and reliability of methods vary.
In the past, basal body thermometers have been popular. These allow a woman to chart her temperature during her cycle and watch for changes to indicate ovulation. They can be used successfully but require more work than other methods and can sometimes be inaccurate.
More recently, urine ovulation predictor kits have become available at affordable prices. These monitor the body for certain hormones that increase as ovulation approaches. They are very accurate and are especially helpful for women whose ovulating cycle varies a lot.
Also available to find out when you are ovulating are ovulation scopes. These allow women to check a saliva sample for distinct patterns that should occur only during ovulation. These are also very accurate but can be more difficult to use.

Good luck!!

You can get an opk(ovulation prediction kit)at any store that has hpts, it should be in the same section. Make sure to read the directions carefully. Both the test and control line need to be the same color and shade to have a positive test. I think they have digital ones now though. It works the same as an hpt as well, just pee on the stick(or dip it in urine).
What worked for me was to just have lots of sex mid cycle. I only used opks when I suspected that I had stopped ovulating.
