The swelling is a haematoma, a local swelling caused by pocket of blood under the skin and associated with ruptured blood vessels. The hammer must have open a wound as well, hence the bleeding. Depending on the weight of the hammer, the skull may or may not be damaged - only an x-ray or scan can confirm. It is advisable for him to go to hospital to have it checked, but many people do get a big bump with no permanent ill-effects, although the bleeding is obviously alarming. The skull in normal adult is usually quite tough. If he stubbornly refuses to go to A&E, check his vision over the next 24 hours, and if he shows any signs of feeling sick, get him to go immediately. Vomitting and blurred vision are bad.
A hard hat is advisable the next time.

If your "partner" refuses to see a doctor, then it's his problem, not yours, especially if he has managed to go to a safe place (i.e., his grandma's home) without further incident. Of course, if nobody else is there, and you're THAT concerned about it, then call the police, but use the local number, because if he made it home, safely, it is clearly NOT an emergency (reporting false emergencies, even innocent ones, such as this, can result in your number being blocked and/or civil action brought against you).
However, I'm more concerned about YOU!
It seems that the incident has affected you, greatly!
Your spelling and grammar have become horrendous,
and you seem to be under the delusion that you are
medically proficient enough to make diagnoses,
not to mention that you're potentially wasting valuable time
by asking the question on a website!
Are you sure that YOU weren't hit by the hammer? ;)

I agree with Al and happy man too. Tell your partner that he's foolish for not going to see a doctor. He may well have an injury. Just because there are none of the symptoms of a fractured skull (straw coloured fluid oozing from the nose or ear is indicative of a fracture) it doesn't mean he hasn't got one. However, first aiders are told if someone dosn't want treatment, there's no way you can compel them. Tell him you're worried and just to do it, even if it is just to put your mind at ease.

GET HIM TO THE HOSPITAL !
GO !
GO NOW !
DON'T WAIT !
THIS COULD BE VERY SERIOUS !
He needs to see a doctor, don't let him make a mistake by not going to hospital.
He may not feel the full affects of the blow to his head right away.
Yes he may just have a bump and a headache at the minute, but people have died through having less serious injury's.
GET HIM TO THE HOSPITAL !
If your having trouble convincing him to go, just show him the advice that everyone has written.

Hit him over the head with a hammer when he gets back and then drag him to a A & E
p.s. forcing someone to do something is called assault and you're not allowed to do that. We're all legally allowed to live or die by our own hand, it's up to your b/f if he wants treatment. You can take him to A & E but if he refuses treatment then the hospital staff will have to respect his wishes.

he really should go to your A & E dept to get it checked. if he refuses to go then keep an eye on him. make sure he doesnt lose any concentration and not being sick. its best not to let him sleep for a while also, if he does fall asleep, wake him every 1/2 hour to make sure he is ok. paracetamol or ibuprofen for the pain.

He should go and get it checked at A&E. However, if he is alert and if he is focusing, has not been sick and if he is not unusually sleepy then he maybe OK.
However he may not.
Good luck.

i hate the way people give smart comments to serious matters!!immature prats!theyl have no luck!!
tell him he needs to go to A+E to peaceify your mind at least because sleeping after a head injury can be quiet dangerous hes probably in shock and doesnt realise that he could have concussion.Get a car force him in it and bring him to A+E :)
