the base x the height, divided by 2.

if you don't know the height, it's not the side of the triangle, unless it's a right triangle.

use a^2+b^2=c^2 to find the height.
and don't forget to square root your answer.

This depends on what information you already have.
If you have one side and the altitude (height) to it, then it's
area = 1/2 base * height
as others have already said.
If you have two adjacent sides and the angle between them, it's
area = 1/2 s1*s2*cos(angle)
If you have all three sides, let s = (a+b+c)/2 (semiperimeter)
area = 1/2 sqrt(s (s-a) (s-b) (s-c))
