Both. Most of the story is mythological from Homer's Iliad, however archaelogical evidence shows there was a real Troy. So many of the people mentioned could have been real and passed down through legend, but the details of their doings would have been exaggerated and embellished.

mythology. Although in the Late Bronze ages a lot of upheaval was occuring in the Mediterranean their probably wasn't a 10 year war over a princess. We do know there was a Hittite City that sounds like Troy. Perhaps the Mycenaen Greeks fought a war with the Hittites which scattered these Early Greeks all over the Mediterranean where they became the Philistines.

Little of both.
The movie was loosely based on the Homeric myths, which were tall tales based on some actual historic wars between Greece and a major City-State in Turkey known as both Troy or ILLIUM.
The Greece story written by the poet Homer was called THE ILLIAD.

I own 3 movie versions of this story. They all change the original stories much. There were several poems about the Trojan war in ancient Greece. All have been lost, except Homer's "Iliad" and "Odyssey". Heinrich Schliemann found troy by using the "iliad" as a guide, so there is some basis in history for the story. Two levels of troy had been besieged, as in greek tales. Achilles was the biggest and strongest of the Greeks and bigger and stronger than any Trojan too. brad pitt is too small to be a good Achilles. he should play Diomed, a small man who beat many bigger men with his skill and courage. Recall Boagrius, the giant whom Achilles fought at the first of the fim (and whom Jet Li fought in "Fearless')? Such a big muscular man is closer to Achilles than Brad is.

The MOVIE was hollywood garbage. So far off from the Iliad , it wasn't worth watching.

The Iliad itself was based on fact. Troy has been found in Tureky. some of the Iliad I am sure was not factual, but Troy did exsist.

Helen of Troy was perfectly real and so was the Trojan horse. Many aspects are the movie were "speculation", but the essential story line was based on actual history..plus the director's embellishment.

The Trojan War was a very famous Greek mythology. Ancient Greeks thought the Trojan War to be a historical event. They believed that it took place in the 13th or 12th century BC. Whether there is any historical reality behind the events of the Trojan War cycle is an open question.
