I am writing a story and I was just curious how long it takes, or if there are any smaller species of iguanas. Thanks!

How long does it take for an iguana to become full size adult? Males usually can get up to 6 ft tall total body length, females usually can get up to 5 ft total body length. Some can be shorter some can be taller.
You can't usually tell if you have a male until snout-vent (SVL) is 6inches in length, for female it's usually SVL is 10inches in length. Some females can go into breeding/gravid when they are around/over 10 1/2 inches long. Age of maturity can begin around 1 1/2-2 years of age, depends are care.
There has been some iguanas who are actually shorter then the average, and it's usually hereditary. The mother/father had to be shorter in size. Pet stores do not know the total length of the iguana you are getting, and I pry they will never alter and sell shorter iguanas for reasons to have a shorter then average iguana.
Depending on care, which includes UVB processed light, or full spectrum sunlight, proper diet (collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, endive, radicchio, watercress mache, dandelion greens - there are some veggies/fruits that are toxic to iguanas), big enough enclosure, correct temps, humidity, and doesn't get mites or parasites, or get scared and drops it's tale, it can take 2 1/2-3 years to reach full size. Proper care does take a part.
In captivity they can live from anywhere from 6 months to 20 years. If properly cared for, they can live up to 20 years, that is the longest I recall of hearing one in captivity.
You may want to include the difference in dewlap, head, and spikes in you're story. Coloring. Teeth. Nails. And how much work they can be for slave/owner, so people will not want to run out and get one after they read/hear your story.

It really depends on what you mean when you say "iguana".

The genus Iguana includes only two species: the Green Iguana and the Lesser Antillean Iguana. The Green iguana grows up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) from head to tail. The Lesser Antillean iguana is slightly smaller, with males growing up to 1.2 meters (4 feet) and females generally being two-thirds the males' size.

However, there are other lizards called "iguana", which belong to a broader and much more diverse Iguanidae family.
