I LOVE getting books as a gift. I'm always running out of things to read, and getting a book is like a really good book recommendation plus it saves me the trouble of getting the book myself. And I think you're right - a lot of people don't have a lot of experience with books, because they only know the kinds of books that they were forced to read in high school, or whatever, which pander to a very specific taste. So for many people, a book would be a good present.
However, not everyone likes to read. Sad, but true. I too always want to buy books for people, but I am often forced to ask myself, is this something they'd really like? When you're getting someone a present, the focus should be on them, and what they WILL, not what you wish they would or think they just might, like. If you think a book will make the best present for them, even if they don't read that much, then go for it. But if your friend would really prefer a charm bracelet, don't let your personal feelings get in the way.

How about a gift card for Books-a-Million or Barnes and Nobel? It's something I would like and I love to read. Even if you aren't great in the reading department, bookstores always have other things there that people buy.

I think it just depends on the person. If you know they don't like to read and you know they won't really appreciate it, then I wouldn't get them a book. I love to read and most of my family does too so for us books are great gifts.

Most men that I know that actually do like reading like things like John Grisham, Stephen King, Dean Koontz, or David Morrell. I also know many that like nonfiction books about topics such as serial killers, so "Encyclopedia of Serial Killers" by Brian Lane and Wilfred Gregg. Erik Larson's "The Devil in White City" and Douglas Preston's "The Monster of Florence" are excellent. If you know their favorite sport, you could get them a book covering the history of that, or a favorite player. Politics would warrant a nonfiction book on the history of a political figure they may be interested in. Basically, it depends on the person, of course, but hope some of these ideas help a bit! :)
