I moved to a home to which former owner left some gardening articles. Among the articles were several old opened bags of turf builder and weed and feed. They must be maybe 2-3 years old but in good shape, bags closed up tight. There is also some weed and feed loose in a bucket that I don't know what to do with. If I can't use it, I need to dispose of it but I can't just throw it away or pour it out on the yard or in the woods 'cause that's bad for the enviornment. Does anybody have a suggestions?

You could ask at your local garden centre if in doubt.....but after 3 years I would say that its way past its use by date as the nutrients may have broken down in this time since the bags are already opened. Yes dispose of the chemicals responsibly. I would again ask at the garden centre about the disposal of this as well - Good Luck

Generally speaking fertilizers have a realtively long shelf life and long as they have been stored in a cool dry location.

There might be some mineral degradation, but not to major to worry about.

The "Weed" side of it may be a different story. Most herbicides generally will have a used by date, but can stay stable for many years. I posed a question of shelf life to a chemcial vendor I reguarly do business with. He stated for the most part if it has been stored well, then it could last for several years.

You will probably be okay with spreading the unopened bags . Just follow the labeled directions.

On the material that is just in a bucket, unless you know exactly what is in it, I would aire on the side of caution and not apply it. I have a strick rule about applying something I know nothing about.

As for disposing, either the bucket or even the bags, I would call your local waste management company or contact your local environmental government agency. In many locations they will have a "Free" dump day to bring in any household hazardous waste. But a few phone calls can help.

I have a bag of 10-10-10 fertilizer that is about 7 years old and never been opened. I would like to use it on the new grass seed that we planted about 2 months ago. does that fertilizer go bad?

The best way to dispose of fertilizer or other chemicals is to use them. Just follow the label instructions.
