My mother had uterine fibroid tumors, and I think I may have them, too. I am bleeding extremely heavily, enough to soak a tampon within half an hour. I have made a doctor's appointment, but they cannot see for a month.

Are there natural ways to reduce this bleeding? HELP!

Try using something cold on the area.

Most people use heat to combat cramps, but a cold-pack will cause vasoconstriction of blood vessels in the area (i.e. make them close up) therefore should reduce bleeding. The use of cold for medical treatment is called cryotherapy.

This is the basic principle of cold stone therapy, which was used by Native American women to staunch the bleeding after childbirth. They used hot stones during the labour to ease the cramps.

You could see if there are any massage or holistic practioners in your area that do cold stone therapy, or you could try it at home by wrapping a bag of ice/frozen peas etc in a towel and holding it against your abdomen for about 15 minutes per hour, the same as you would a heat-pack for cramps. Incidentally Im not sure if the cold might make cramps better or worse so sorry if its the latter! It should reduce the bleeding though.

Well, first and foremost, talk to a doctor (maybe a specialist would be required)... just in case it's something other than what you suspect. If you can't see your doctor for a month, you may want to see another doctor if you are concerned.

However, there are natural products that help to promote a hormonal balance that many women take to temper their various "monthly issues". There's Black Cohosh, Chasteberry (also called Vitex), Dong Quai, and Omega-6 fatty acids like those in Borage Oil or Evening Primrose Oil.

There are also some phytoestrogens (plant hormones) that may effect your hormones, but a nutritionist or holistic doctor would be the best to ask what would be the best type (as different people have different responses to different supplements).

Increase your vit C and take an herbal immune system booster like echinacea with goldenseal or astragalus when you feel a UTI coming on. Rest. Definitely keep up the cranberry intake. Echinacea and astragalus cannot be taken for more than a week or else they become ineffective for your system.

I agree with oldtimek as far as the omega 6 oils which I take. I have the same problem and have tried different things. What happens with uterine fibroids is that they are the result of a problem called estrogen dominance and since the fibroids are causing the excessive bleeding, your mother needs to take a product called DIM(diindolymethane) this is a phytosterol that comes from cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts. It helps your body to produce good estrogens and balances your hormones. Your mother would have to eat two big family bowls of broccoli with olive oil and lemon juice to get about 5mg of DIM. Because my estrogen levels are unbalanced I take about 4- 75mg capsules of DIM, 2 at breakfast and two at lunch. You have to take it with food. It is recommended that she takes a test to see where her hormonal levels are. If she takes it for 4 to 6 months she should see a difference, her periods will be lighter and she might lose a little weight it depends on her and how healthy she eats. Dong quai, soy are good but it is a phyto estrogen and could contribute to her estrogen dominance. She needs to stay away from anything with soy or soybean oil it makes this condition worse and will make the fibroid grow, until her hormone levels become balanced.
There is also a product for eating up the fibroid called vitalzym. These are enzymes that eat up dead matter and fibrin, which is what fibroids are made of. Calcium d-glucarate is from fruits and vegetables takes used and extra estrogen from your system these things can help your mother a lot.
This is a long term solution. I wish I knew of something that would work quicker for your mother these supplements are helping me, but unfortunately they take time.

What Uterine Fibroids Are

Uterine fibroids are solid muscle tissue growths in the uterus. They are also called fibroid tumors, myomas, or leiomyomas. They occur frequently -- in up to half of all women over forty. The majority (80%) of fibroids are as small as a walnut, usually not bigger than an orange. In the USA, about one third of all hysterectomies is because of the fibroids.

Estrogens, especially estradiol, promote their growth. Estrogen levels can rise during the early menopausal years, so suddenly, there is this diagnosis in spite of there being no previous symptoms and warnings. The symptoms can be, amongst others:

. feeling of heaviness in the belly,

. low back pain,

. pain with vaginal penetration,

. bowel difficulties,

. urinary frequency or incontinence,

. severe menstrual pain and flooding

. heavy menstrual bleeding..

Hysterectomy will solve the problem but in a most violent way -- by taking the uterus out, often taking the ovaries out as well. The patient is being thrown into a surgical menopause, for the rest of her life. It is worthwhile to try other approaches to avoid hysterectomy, and there actually exist herbal remedies for uterine fibroids.

Some Well Known Herbal Remedies for Uterine Fibroids

The following are just the most popular herbal remedies for uterine fibroids. Any herb (or stimulant, for that matter) that affects the levels of estrogen will also affect the fibroids, for better or worse.

. Eat more of whole grains or beans. Strictly speaking, these are not herbal remedies for uterine fibroids per se, but will help reduce the size of fibroids and will also protect from breast and endometrial cancers as well.

. Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), milk thistle seed (Silybum marianum), or yellow dock root (Rumex crispus) will strengthen the liver. That will, in turn, metabolize estrogen out of the body, thus reducing fibroids.

. Vitex (Agnus Cactus) or chasteberry tincture works directly with the pituitary gland, balancing the entire hormonal system. Take it 25-30 drops two to four times daily, and the fibroids will be shrunk. You will see first results within a few months, but continue taking it up to a year or two.

. Warm castor oil packs and ginger compresses on the belly will also help with the fibroids.

. Poke root (Phytolacca americana) used both internally and externally as a belly rub oil, will relieve the pain and distress from fibroids. This herb is poisonous, so may have to make it yourself.

Practically all these herbs are tested and available as homeopathic remedies. It is possible to mix homeopathic remedies with herbal remedies.

Also, you can and should have a homeopathic treatment, with a specialist. In the meantime, here is a small list of homeopathic remedies that can be useful for fibroids:

Reiki can help a lot in this situation. Please have a look at the page

Finally, I have had one good experience with Vitalzym. A client of mine (I am a medical astrologer), had intensive transits of Saturn over the natal Moon for almost a year, in 2005 and 2006. She had a fibrod as large as 6.4 inches and could barely walk. She started taking Vitalzym in August 2006, and in January 2007 the fibroid shrank down to 3 inches! I have no further data about the case, but it seems Vitalzym did help her to avoid hysterectomy!
