I'm part of a secret santa thing this year and got someone that I don't really know much about. I know that he fences, plays the violin, likes to cook, and likes geeky things. I hear he like geeky little gadgets (ex: he has a clock that displays the numbers in binary code in his room). Looking to spend 15-20 dollars. Any suggestions?

Also, suggestions are open to pretty much anything, I don't need to get him something that fits his personality, its for a fraternity secret santa, so I could get him something completely off the wall and innappropriate too.

I'm married to an engineer. The best gift I ever got him was about $20. I went to TigerDirect and got him a Wi-Fi signal locator. If you are out and about, you push this little button and it tells you if you are in an area with an open wireless internet account.

He loves it and uses it on all his travels now.

Also consider Brookstone. It's expensive and I wouldn't purchase anything there but it is a great place for ideas. I work with engineers and one of them is in my office right now talking about how you can never have too many microSD cards but I think thats more expensive. There is always Best Buy's clearance rack. Impossible not to find the ideal gift there.

My husband also has 2 cords he loves. One is a cord that plugs into your laptop and the other is a pair of headphones. They both have those cords that roll up into the case (you know--like how your vacuum does. You push the little button and it sucks the cord back into it). He loves those and they go on every trip with us.

Since he likes to cook. you could get a couple unique spices. My husband just got a personalized branding iron for one of his engineering buds for Christmas. You can put most team logos on there, the state of Texas, or your initials. He got our friends initials. But a couple unique spices would be great too--like go to an asian market or hispanic grocery store and pick up some spices that you can't just get at any grocery store.

Do you have a World Market near you? I absolutely love that store and they have a great kitchen selection of unique items and European groceries/treats.

Hope these ideas give you some hints! Good luck!

A set of slide rules! They have slide rules for every profession now. I like the ones for the chemical engineer! Get the good ones that are made of metal and are really precise! Or a book about science or mathematics!

Gift card to a nice nearby super market, like Whole Foods or Trader Joe's.

I'd go for the oven mitts.
