Unions- the NEA is certainly not out for the best interests of the students. Also, education has become too political, and this creates a dangerous combination. ( molding minds mixed with political agenda )

i work for a school and i will tell you what is wrong its not money and its not teachers ...^its both^ the real problem is the belief that a child's emotional state is more important that there education Teachers are not allowed to give red marks on papers because it might hurt there feelings .. this is crazy that a mark is more important than the learning and knowing of a subject : also it falls to the parents to raise ther kids not the schools .

Teachers now a days Care more about the money than showing A student the joy of learning . also we as a society focus to much on what a child can't do and not enough on what they Excel at .

It's my opinion that schools have lost touch with what type of education our young people need in order to be successful in life. The curriculum needs to be changed to reflect the real world and the interests and abilities of our children.

Bill Gates has developed a new school/curriculum design that is being tested in a few schools in Seattle and New York - it looks very promising.

I think money is an issue in many cases but I also feel that money is just the beginning of the problem. We need to start paying teachers a salary that reflects their educations, abilities and value to society. Teacher's salaries are so low they're an embarrassment - the old adage applies, "you get what you pay for".

there are alot of problems with the schools

but think about the countries that dont have "free" public education

the Founding Fathers made free public education a principal when setting up the US, most states already madated schools in the cities and towns were possible

it was what made the middle class and a democracy possible

look how the lack of public education turned the Russian and Chinese serfs into willing slaves for communist dictators

to them communism was better than what they had (and for most it was at first)

as messed up as our system is, its still a fundamental part of a free and democratic country

I think it is the no child left behind policy.....my daughter is 10 and I can barely make out what she is writing. I brought this up to her Teachers and principal and it doesn't seem to be a problem, as long as she knows what shes writing its ok. I don't understand when I was a child if my teacher couldn't read something I had to do it over or I got a bad grade. When we do homework I will make her do it over if it isn't neat. I think they are making life to easy for children and the government is worried it might upset kids if they fail so they are just pushing them right through, which in the long run is ruining there future.

What do you mean "wrong"? Our American public schools are doing a fine job, using all their Rubles and Kopecks to get our sweet children and grandchildren all brand-spankin' ready for the 19th century. (sarcasm)

What's wrong with America's public schools? Every bureaucrat above classroom teacher should be fired on the spot, and 2/3 of the teachers could stand to be fired also! Then we parents might have a fighting chance to change our schools to really meet the needs of the 21st century's future citizens!

Public means, any one can attend, A privet, your parents are going to pay for you the get the best education they can afford. Most parents of privet school students, are over achievers and see the value in a privet education. History, a privet schooled kid, will excel in his or her future.

In a public setting, a teacher can et discouraged, or num to the frustrations they see every day with slackers or students who don’t values an education. Now as add fact they don’t get paid enough and you have a recipe for disaster.

Teachers hands are tied, Can't discipline students. They have to mince every word so as to not insult the little rasccals. Also, you have the teacher's union who protect unfit teachers.
We're far to liberal these days. Root of most evil in our country.

Bush. No Child Left Behond has put our teachers in a place where they are forced to "teach towards the tests". All of the emphasis it placed on the scores of standardized tests and nothing else matters. The teachers are between a rock and a hard place and not making any money while they're there.
