Any ideas on how to go about making an ornament for them? Materials I need? What to use to glue whatever I need together? Any ideas for a cute message to put on the ornament to represent their first christmas at their first home together?

Take a photo of their new house. print it out using an ink jet printer, on acetate. cut it out and slip it into a clear glass ornament. It will look a bit like stained glass.
Take a bunch of photos of the 2 of them. print them out on heavy paper, cut out into triangle shapes, and glue them together to make interesting shaped ornaments.
You can use regular photos that are not very good, and just cut out the parts that are good, and create photo mosaic ornaments, decoupage on old glass ornaments that are tarnished, so you can reuse them.

Purchase a clear glass ornament - a ball shape is probably best. acid etch a design (or the year, perhaps) onto the ornament (the acid & stencils can be purchased at Michael's or another craft store). the design will be frosty against the clear glass.

after that, take the cap/hanger thingie (sorry, my words aren't coming to me so clearly, but i hope you know what i mean) off the ornament and roll a smallish photo and slide it into the ornament (i'd use 2 photos and glue the backs together so that none of the white photo paper shows). the photo(s) should be small enough that they automatically unroll inside the glass ball.

you could let the photo just hang out inside the ball ornament or before you put inside, punch a small hole in it and tie twine or ribbon to the photo and attach to the cap/hanger thingie on the ornament to make it dangle inside.

EDIT: as a matter of fact, i just found the article where i got the idea. remember, this can be used as a guide and you can modify it however you want to make it easier or make it your own (that's what i did with the acid etching).

A simple but cute way is to purchase an ornament
and buy some Perm Enamel paint and paint the
Year on the ornament. Add some ribbon and you will
have an ornament. You can always decoupage a cute
Christmas clipart or a color photo copy of a picture
of them and add the year with dimensional paint.

I found a book on Japanese thread balls in the library. They'd make the most beautiful Christmas tree decorations! Temari, I think it was called.
