My wife quit her job, went abroad on holiday while I kept things going at home for four months. She has found it hard to get a job and said we should sell the house, but why shoudl I lose out on the home? Don't I deserve her support now, just as I gave it to her? I am fed up with her indecisiveness and when we got the house we did it on the basis we both worked. I don't earn enough to cover us both. So what to do?

Tricky one because it is her home too and if she needs the money I guess she has a right to sell...... Have you actually asked her though where she plans to live and more importantly, how she plans to pay her way? Even if you downsize she shouldn't use the equity from the first home to pay the mortgage as it just won't last and make no sense.

Has she given any thought to you or shown any remorse in how she is disrupting your life while she is obviously going through a very difficult period? Maybe you could perhaps compromise if she worked part time, in a temp job, for a few months/a year while she sorted herself out. Selling the house seems drastic if she is currently looking for a job. Have you had a repayment holiday on your mortgage before? You can iusually get one for up to 6 months for lifestyle changes, may be worth looking into as that is a reasonable time for her to find a job. Otherwise if you can't agree maybe it would just be best to sell and split the proceeds and spend some time apart so she is forced back into a bit of reality.

See a lawyer and establish the percentage of the house you would get if you split (probably half, but it depends - if there are children all bets are off).

Cut up all her and your credit cards.

Take advice on protecting any money in your bank account - maybe shut joint bank account so it cannot be emptied.

Depending on length of marriage you may have to pay maintenance - so don't rush into separation or divorce.

Present an ultimatum.

Set time limit for her to get a job - 2 months is reasonable.

So is being a shelf packer or barmaid until the right job comes along.

Rent a room out if possible.

Take your own precautions against pregnancy.

Never again take out a mortgage based on two salaries - most people have to live on one at some point.

hold up...ur wife quit her job and went on vacation for 4 months while u worked??? I wouldn't lose out on the house but she would. If she didn't get a job, I would put her out and get a roomate thats willing 2 take responsibility. I wouldn't continue 2 support her party.

A four month vacation on benefit?

Ask this lazy git if she is familiar with the term "freeloader"?

She needs to shape up or ship out.

get a roommate or rent the house, she sounds selfish any job is better than nothing at all if she cared at all about you she would be willing to make those sacrifices.
