I agree with Audamar...white ppl do buy music out of popularity....I remember when Kid and Play came out with House Party. When I went to the record store that weekend. I saw white kids buying now only the album that was current...But they bought all of their music that day...lol So I think that its not hard to believe that whites play a big part in stats. But at the same time I dont think its that high of a percentage...Also a lot of Asians buy hip hop music too...Maybe we are looking at it from a American consumer stand point....Because places like Amsterdam are heavy on hip hop. So this my be on an international view

I question that statistic too. I'm white and I buy a lot of hip hop music - nobody has ever asked me to be part of a survey about it though. What do they do, makes notes at the record store of every white person buying hip hop then send them on to somebody?!

OK, you might have read this already, but the best I could find was

Said a musicologist called Arthur Kempton came up with the figure. Maybe if you google him you'll have more luck?

Hip Hop may be better many times than not finished by ability of black artists although the large boys in the back of the scenes making the large greenbacks are the white employer executives. The artists make pennies on the album they don't somewhat make each and each of the money they declare they basically employ autos employ mansions employ jewlery and stay paycheck to paycheck paying for issues with educate money although the multi millionares are the white adult men operating those businesses. Rappers are posers, actors, tale tellers... they don't do what they declare they do.

It may seem counterintuitive, but since caucasians make up the largest segment of the population, it jives that a disproportionately high number of rap music consumers would be white. 70% sounds a little high, but you have to dissuade yourself from believing the stereotype that rap music is only consumed by African-Americans. Also, rap music is predominately listened to by younger people, which can also skew the statistics.

It would be interesting to see the methodology behind the statistic, that is, how they obtained the data. Lots of folks buy music digitally now, through sources such as iTunes and such. I would imagine it would be hard to get good survey data from people who get their music through those means. However, companies spend lots of money to get good demographic data, so they know how to spend their marketing money.

Short answer is, the data may be a little suspect, but it's not at all that unusual to conceive that lots of white people buy rap music.

I'd believe it but you would really have to define what you're considering rap/hip-hop or more specifically sales of which albums. I think it goes without saying that if you're talking about top 40s rap/hip-hop that 70% of the consumers are white because most studies show that more white families have income to throw at things like that. Not trying to start a race war or anything but that's just the state of things.

I doubt where ever these statistics came from took independent labels in to consideration but if you're talking about underground rap/hip-hop then the statistic still doesn't surprise me. I hate to generalize but in my experience most non-white rap/hip-hop fans can't stand "backpacker" rap/hip-hop. Murs even makes a point of it in several of his songs that he finds it strange that most of his fans are white.

no sources here and i don't question it... its like nelly said, "we live in a country thats 30% Black, so the only way you're gonna sell that many records is if white people buy you're record"

EDIT: *AND* you gotta add in the bootleggers and downloaders... you aint gon see too many people tryna sell you a burned album in your average predominately white community... why would i spend $10-$15 when i can get it off the block for $3-$5?

DOUBLE EDIT: only 12%?!?! hell, that just makes the point even more valid!!! LMAO

It's just a bullsh*t survey. It may or may not be true. I'm broke and can't buy albums as much. I love questioning statistics and studies. I even made up my own.

Recent studies show that most studies are bullsh*t. They're incorrect because they don't count every indivdual.(Probably impossible but hey, that's not my fault) Therefore the data is obsolete.

"u blaming whites for buying crappy albums like soulja boys?"

Hell yea! y'all don't know better. not to be racist (even though i don't care) majority of whites buy things according to popular demand. if it ain't hot chances are they are not purchasing it. not to say other races (including blacks) shop any differently but i ve seen white people buy **** i know good and well they don't want it. like take those exercises equipment ads you see on TV. 9 times outta 10 its a white dude thinking about getting back in shape and buys off impulse not because its an excellent tool to shape his body but because of the popular demand. they're are 100's of those products but he rather buy what people know the most. why? the more people that have it the safer he feels to admit he bought one.

bottom line. buy what you like....not what "I" like.

Black people download the music, and white people actually go out and buy it lol....Saigon did an interview about this..its on onsmash.com...saying how white people buy the majority of his cd's but he's not gonna change his style of music to what white people wanna hear, reguardless if they're going to buy it or not... That percentage doesnt really shock me too much. I worked at a cd store and the majority of the people buying rap cds were white...its crazy but true
