Hi:
Most plants and crops require some type of nitrogen to survive. Nitrogen is an essential nutrient and especially for cotton crops. Back in the days of George Washington Carver they didn't have stores to buy fertilizers. Today one of the best types of fertilizer is a six month slow release nitrogen fertilizer. This allows the crops or plants to get the nitrogen at different intervels.
I hope this has helped some and if you have any further questions, please feel free to contact me at my website. I will link you to my site map as well as my simple solutions section. My site map has everything that is on the website.
Have a great day!

Nitrogen depletion would cause a very poor crop yield.

Soil fertility which includes Nitrogen, Phosphorus and Potassium along with some micro nutrients is the building blocks for healthy plants.

Some plants can actually aide in the replenishment of certain soil nutrients, that is why crop rotation is very important.

Some plants, such as cotton, are referred to as "Heavy feeders". In other words, their roots extract lots of nutrients from the soil while they are growing. That is why farmers employ crop rotation techniques to replenish the soil's fertility. They can achieve this by growing what is known as a cover crop, such as hairy vetch or fava beans, to add nitrogen back into the soil. Plants from the legume family are especially known for their Nitrogen-fixing qualities. (Peas & Beans) other methods for soil replenishment would include adding soil ammendments such as decayed vegetable matter and straw or chemicals such as phosphorus & nitrogen.

Organic farmers prefer not to use chemicals, unless they are achieved naturally. By heavy chemical use, eventually the soil can become depleted. By preserving the natural ecosystem in the soil, through composting & cover-cropping, the environment is less vulnerable to chemical run-off into streams or the aquifer, and soil is healthier, which will in turn produce greater yeilds.

Take nitrogen from the soul and the crop will not flourish. We nourish our lawn with fertilizer so that it will grow, stay green and survive stress from heat and lack of rain. Nitrogen content is vital. Crops require even greater attention and proper fertilization is paramount to them flourishing or giving good yields. Crop fertilizers are heavy in nitrogen.
