i live in the north of england and set off to work at 6.30 am. when i come out of my back door and the sky is clear (its mostly cloudy!!) there is a very bright object in the sky. i think i'm looking east and i'm pretty sure its venus. am i correct? also if i look to the west more or less 180 degrees there is a little red star. could this be mars? i've tried using google sky but my pc is too clogged up with crap for it to work properly so i cant use it!! thanks

Because you've told us your location, the time, and the directions, I can tell you quite precisely that what you are seeing are Venus and Mars respectively. I set my software Starry Night to York (probably close enough) at 6:30 a.m. and it shows Venus in the southeast at 20° altitude and Mars in the west at 30° altitude. Mars is coming to opposition later this month, so it's visible all night: low in the east in the evening, high in the south at midnight, and low in the west at dawn.

It is Venus you see in the east in the Morning. It MAY be mars you see in the west in the morning, but Mars is more easily seen in evening in the northeast. It is a bright reddish star pretty close to a medium dim star in Gemini seen in the northeast in the early evening.

Venus dominates the early morning skys right now, it is very bright and this is due to the fact that the atmosphere is so dense that it dont absorb the sunlight and it bounces off making it very bright,

Yes, that is most likely Venus. The other one is probably Mars - it's up near the constellation Orion right now.
