You only need to remove our HDD, and beat it to death with a hammer. There is no software in the world, no matter what they claim, that will prevent a forensic computer expert from stripping off the data on your HDD. With the hammer, it is impossible to strip any data. Or you can remove the HDD, like I do and place in my home safe. Get rid of the pc without your HDD. If you wish to give them away, still remove the HDD, and let the receiver purchase their own HDD.

There are environmental issues when getting rid of your old computers and printers. There are authorized places that will either pick up or you must take your computers there for disposal, please check your local governmental agency. In most areas, there is a fine if your do not properly dispose of your old computers. Computers and printers have hazardous waste that will affect the environment. BTW these places should be able to tell you how to erase your hard drive before disposal.

Play Captain Destructo with any hard drive(s)...we put ours in a vise in the garage, then went after it with a sledge and pliers and whipped and tugged and mashed it into several tiny pieces and disposed of them in several locations all over town... Per instructions on 60 Minutes and local news and various and several websites.

Then, with the rest, either sell it (if you can, which is doubtful) or look up uses (which you might...there was an article recently in PC magazine) or check with e.g. HP in California for safe disposal. Our local dump refused it for HAZmat reasons, wanting a fee of MORE than shipping elsewhere!

you can lowlevel format the hdd
there are also DOD (dept of defense) formatting method tools out there such as GDisk
aside the hard drive you might consider most places now charge an environmental fee for pc dumping.

You need to take it to a recycling center. Look in your local yellow pages for a center close to you. Before you do though, you will want to securely erase everything on the harddrive. There are free utilities for that. Check out this article:

It has been my experience that things you cannot give away, put in a yard sale. I guarantee someone will buy it. lol

But seriously you should wipe your hard drive clean just in case someone does get it or take the hard drive out completely and destroy it.

As Janjaley says a hammer, i suggest a hammer to the hard drive, as that's the only guaranteed way to make sure the hard drive is unreadable, any other parts you can recycle

SAVE THE PARTS ON THE INSIDE

They will be usefull. As for the monitor and stuff, you COULD keep it or just put it out with your normal trash. Save the hard drive, RAM, and the motherboard.

You have to call the waste department so that they can properly dispose of it. Otherwise, you are at risk for a safety hazard.
