I started back rideing Dec. 05, 4 weeks after a 7 way heart bypass. Most every one thought I was crazy. I promised my self an family I would buy, an ride again if I lived thru surgery. First 12 months after buying I rode thru the winter about 22 mile round trip to work. Lowest temp. I rode was 27, I finnaly admited I got chilly that morning, lol. Currently have about 5,500 miles on 1 bike a 1,000 on the other. Only been on 2 trips 250 miles an about 230 miles. Rest local rideing. Theres so many think we that ride are crazy so why be concerned with them. Just enjoy the ride ever how long or short.

I would invest in a comfortable seat for sure but as for shorts, it's a personal preference. Your butt will eventually get used to the distances that you ride, it will just take some time. My husband and I rode in a 150 mile 2 day ride and the padded pants were really worth it but for every day rides, I don't think they are necessary. Find shorts that won't chafe and shoes that have good air flow and you should be set. And if you do go on a really long ride and you are willing to wear padded shorts, just wear loose ones over the top so you don't feel so dorky:) That's what my husband did.

Do it, but be careful, there are an awful lot of inattentive auto. drivers out there. I was asked by 2 friends last spring to ride from Stockton,Ca. to Colorado Springs with them (2300miles round trip) I hadn't ridden for years and had no bike. I had a couple of months before the ride so I bought and restored an old 1983 Honda 750 V twin. I planned a one time only ride but had so much enjoyment that after I returned I made several 1 day rides locally and went into Yosemite Natl. Park twice camping. I just bought a new bike and next year it is back to Colorado and traveling desert highways. I met lots of interesting and friendly people.

All don't approve of it? Well you must be associating with the wrong people. Bikes are a great way to see the country. The camaraderie is something you won't find traveling by car. Biking isn't as comfortable as traveling by car, but some of the times I remember best were when we stopped to rest our tired butts, looking out from a mountain over the valley below and just talking. When it's hot you're hot, when it's cold you're cold and when it rains you get wet. I've been through all that stuff countless times and I'm still alive and well. If you ***** when you're uncomfortable, there's no need in touring but there's no need in bitching because it isn't going to change anything. Having to stop more often gives you a chance to visit with the locals, find good resturants and do some sightseeing. One thing you get when biking that you can't get when traveling by car is the memories that smells, odors and scents bring back. Whenever I smell a wet pine tree, my mind immediately goes back to 1980 in Flagstaff where I had to wait in the desert while a storm went through the mountains around town. Burning tree leaves takes me to chilly winter nights passing through small towns in Mississippi when I would be heading to Florida. Citrus blossoms remind me of cool, damp, foggy winter nights in Florida and the overpowering, sickly sweet scent of citrus groves. Baking bread reminds me of a bread bakery in Denver and Lakeland, Florida. If possible, at first travel with some experienced long haul bikers because they have experience when it comes to weather, roads, what to pack and so on. Take a camera and even a notebook to record your thoughts. And if you have your own bike, take it too. Just be aware that the hyper sport bikes aren't exactly the best bikes to tour on. Even if that's what you have, just slow down, relax and enjoy while you take your time. Scraping the pegs on a mountain road is not the way to see the country because all you can look at is the road. I tell people that what ever doesn't kill you makes for a good story later. Incidently, my buddies and I put on 3,700 miles this summer and even though we were in 110F temps, motels with non-functional AC and whopping big thunderstorms, we had a ball.

On Jun first of 06 some friends and I rode from south eastern South Dakota, to Alaska. When we returned home on the thirtieth , I was a little tired, a little sore, and wanting very much to turn around and do it again. When ever I have the time and money to take off for a few days I'm gone. Enjoy life while you can, and the hell with what other people say.

personal preference really.

my wife wouldn't give you 15 cents to ride more than a couple of hours once a month, whereas I would ride everywhere I went...

I stick strickly to dirt bikes these days, as there are just too many idiots, rednecks, and people that don't pay attention to their surroundings for me to safely ride the streets any more. I would love to have something for weekend rides in the country, but know full and well that if I had something like that, I would end up riding it more and more and even to work (commute about 50 miles each way from the suburbs into the metro area) which would not be in my best interest ...

My younger sibling road a 250 cc with dual sport tires from
Belize to California. My dual sport machine has 24,300 miles on it. Pavement's dandy but Nature is sandy.

It's the reason to ride! You might seem crazy to "ordinary" people, but you already decided not to be one of them.

Ride on! I'll see you out there! I'll be riding the scooter across the US!
