Scrub them, cut off the ends, and cut them into 1/2" cubes. Take 6 potatoes, peel, and cut into 1/2" cubes.
Do the same with some carrots and celery stalks.
Cut up some cheap beef (beef for stew) into cubes and brown them in a skillet or the bottom of a dutch oven in some olive oil. Add at least 2 quarts of water and the veggies, and make a stew. Add salt, pepper, and herbs (such as herbs-de-provance mixture). Add some beef broth, or beef stock to make it rich-er.
The potatoes and turnips will look the same (white, solid), but the taste of the turnips will be different than the potatoes.

Make a pasta dish. Put a pot of water on to boil. salt it. when it boils add some orrichiette pasta. While it's cooking heat some olive oil in a large skillet. Add some peeled and diced turnips and salt and pepper. Let them cook a few minutes. Add some chopped garlic and some red pepper flakes. Chop the turnip greens and add them to the skillet. Let it cook until the turnips and greens are tender, usually takes as long as it does to cook the pasta. When the pasta is done, drain it, reserving some of the cooking liguid. Add the pasta to the pan with the turnip mixture and heat altogether a couple of minutes. Add a little pasta water if it seems dry. Serve it with parmesan cheese. You could also add some italian sausage too.

My dad always par-boiled them (I think for about 10 minutes, and then roasted them with a little butter in the oven. You have to clean and peel them, just like a potato, first. Not sure how long you roast them though. Hope that helps. They're really yummy!
