In the ancient world, water was not just for drinking and agriculture; it was also the highway.

So people settled near water for drinking, for watering crops, for animals they raised to drink; but rivers were especially useful and as such some of the first civilizations grew up around rivers and used them for trading.

Even today, how many major cities don't have the sea or a river nearby, or along it?

The land by the river basin and shore was the most fertile, since early civilizations depended mainly on farming. The trade routes were open also, and people were able to transport themselves on boats through the river. Water for drinking was also very important, and the natural resources that were found around the river were used as money and other housing projects.

Simply because water is necessary for all lifeforms, animals and plants. With a river, you have a source of water to irrigate plants, annual flooding for new topsoil, a source for hunting animals (who come to the river to drink, and who live in the water) and getting food, and a way to rid yourself of sewage and garbage.
