Why does society impel individuals to be "coupled?"

Well, it gives the little man a little chance to get a little nookie and have children. With all the big racks out there, and all the women falling over themselves for them, it's society's way of tilting the balance of power just a little bit. Perhaps even diversifying the gene pool. :-)

From the woman's point of view, it keeps her provider providing for her and their children. But now with paternity testing and the force of law, she can assemble many men as providers of her children, lowering the economic pressure for monogamy.

From the child's point of view, it keeps the father involved in the development of the child, maximizing its sucess in the world. This can allign with the father's goals as well.

Raising a child on your own is difficult at best. Men tend to want to pass on their seed and name. Besides, can you imagine making 10 child support checks to 10 different women? Ouch.

Other than reproduction and fear of diseases, I have no idea. Maybe that's why swingers and f*ck buddies are popular. In my personal life, I have too much of a jealousy thing so I have to be his only women. Yet to meet a man that doesn't mind sharing me with another man when he can't satisfy. Maybe it's hard wired into our minds.

An interesting fact for you, in the animal kingdom when the male is larger (usually significantly) than the female it usually means they go by the alpha male traditions. Meaning only the strongest male reproduces with all the females. If you think of humans the average male is larger than the female. So maybe it used to be like that.

As the king of the jungle, I did not understand monogamy. The domain was mine to do with as I wished. As I got older I sought comfort over territory and now have been happily married for 4 years.

It is generally believed that in monogamy that a couple will form a closer bond.

As opposed to multiple partners where a parent is shared in some way.

i've often asked myself that too, this concept of two people being totally right for one another seems very odd. How can one person possibly satsify your every need? I know that pylogomy is frowned upon, but i think, in theory it does have some benefits. The pylogomist wives i've seen on television seem happy and content and they choose to live that lifestyle. i don't understand all the moral uproar about it.

One purpose is to be able to determine the parentage of children. This can be important so that people can be made aware of any genetic defects in the bloodline. It is also important in determining family succession for possessions and other things.

So when the inevitable "replacement-units" arrive their friends don't have to ask: "who's your daddy?"

It's commercially correct.

(couples buy more stuff than singles)

And also, religion does not want people to have fun with sex. It's only to procreate, you know.
