Because of the type of engines in the Subaru's, they are flat engines, they are more expensive than a regular 4 cylinder engine, try getting a rebuilt unit rather than a junkyard unit

Subaru's are very good cars, I don't blame you for trying to keep it going. I would try car-part.com to find a great engine for your beast. Also, remeber that a used engine should be properly coolant flushed and de-sludged with butyl cellosolve (Power Tune, a product of Mercury Boat Engines)before returning to service. You'll be glad you did it right!!!!
