I'm 13 weeks pregnant and discover I have gall bladder stones. My doc says I should wait till end of pregnancy to remove, but I'm not sure about the risks or what to expect if I don't remove them till the end of my pregnancy.
Can somebody give advise? Have anybody gone through the same?

I have never gone through this, but it is never safe to have surgery around the baby when you are pregnant, because of the risk of cutting the sac. I had a cyst on my ovaries when I was pregnant with my 3rd, and they would not even do a biopsy until I delivered. Just keep ALL of your appointments. Under the circumstances, the doctor will tell you every thing you need to know, and you need to listen to him even if you think he/she is wrong. Listen to them, they know best at this point. Please take care of yourself, and be careful. I'm sure you and your baby will be fine. I wish you the best, and Congratulations!!!

I doubt that any respectable Dr would put you under and cut you open while you were pregnant. trying to figure out the anesthesia alone could be a lawsuit waiting to happen.

Gall stones can be treated with diet changes until you give birth. Most times flare ups will occur when large amounts of greasy & fatty foods are eaten. Talk to your Dr about what kind of diet you should follow. And make sure you tell your OB about the gall stones as well.

Good luck.

I don't imagine you would have any risks except being uncomfortable. In rare case the gall bladder could burst. But that's after a long time. I had mine out and I was in and out. Had it done that morning and was home that night. With about 2 incisions on the right side of my belly, one above my bellybutton and one in my bellybutton. I had no complications except a reaction to codeine and the bellybutton incision got infected. If you aren't having gall bladder attacks it can wait. They hurt quite a bit though. They are brought on sometimes by fatty greasy or spicy food. It feels like pressure and cramps in your upper abdomen. Drink carbonated water and try to belch them away. It wont cause the baby any bother. But when he/she grows it could possibly cause you pain in the gall bladder. Don't worry about it though. Tons of people have gallstones and suffer no adverse effects.

I would say that undergoing any type of surgery while pregnant wouldnt be a good idea unless the stones are life threatening. a friend of mine didnt have gall bladder stones, but they wouldnt do anything for the stones she did have until after she had her baby (sorry I dont remember where they were, i want to say she had kidney stones?)

Any surgery is risky during pregnancy, that is why they postpone it, if at all possible, until after you have given birth. Gall stones usually are not life threatening. If they become so, then, of course, the benefit outweighs the risk.

In most cases having your gallbladder out is not an emergency and can wait until after the baby. Your doctor is right, waiting is fine.

I had mine out 5yrs ago because mine stopped working all together(no stones) and it was affecting my liver and kidneys. In most cases with stones your gallbladder is still working fairly well and removing it is just to relieve symptoms.

My neighbors daughter has recently went through the same thing. She has not had the surgery yet because of other delivery complications, but she now has bigger stones and in a lot more pain. I would wait until you deliver unless the pain is just to unbearable.

Not really. I think any doctor that performs an elective gallbladder surgery during pregnancy is a quack.

Unless the gallbladder is inflamed enough to be causing major problems (vomiting and severe pain) it can wait. I've known I've had gallstones for years and have never had to have mine removed because it doesn't cause any symptoms. They're "just there".

Good luck to you!

i would say not to have it until after because this is very dangerous to the baby to undergo surgery like this because of where the surgery is done i do not know that there are many drs out there that would do it with you being pregnant anyways! good luck
