I'm not white, nor am I black, nor should it matter. So let's make that clear. Now maybe I haven't heard all the details, but from what it sounds like, someone was beaten nearly to death. Once the 6 kids that assaulted him were arrested and charged, there was outrage within the black community over a series of disgusting racists acts, such as hanging nooses under a tree. But my questions is, what about the kid that was nearly killed? Why doesn't the black community acknowledge the fact that he was assaulted to the point of near death? just curious...

nearly killed or not (although everywhere i read says "nearly killed), an assalut is an assault. so answer my question. why shouldn't his assailants be held responsible?

broiler4...that makes more sense. thatnks for the clarification. the charges didn't fit the crime, from what it sounds like.

* punishment wouldn't have fit the crime, since he was not beat that badly.

The dude was not nearly killed. Jesus, can you save the melodrama for your next audition?

Near death, yet able to attend a school function. My husband works in health care. Near death is life support in the ICU.

Real objective..lol.

the white kids in the school would harass the black kids and they got fed up with it. Jena is a racist area, so imagine going through life being picked on because of the color of your skin. Eventually, you're going to erupt and that's how they decided to react. Im not saying that it's okay to beat somebody but if a person is going to treat another poorly, expect to get it right back.

As for the nooses, those were from back in the day and people would hang others from trees. From my understanding, i may be getting this wrong, the white kids would put nooses on the trees and the black kid wanted it cut down. more tension was buld due to this.

And as others have said, the original ruling was thought to be unfair. Many people fought to get a fair trial and have justice.

basically what it came down to was a group (6) black kids jumped a white kid and beat his azz pretty bad. Well the black kids were arrested and charged for attempted murder and would be charged as adults since they were like 16 and 17 yea olds. Well that didn't sit well with the black or the rest of the intellegent community of the country and that is why it is ok for 6 guys to show how tough they are by jumping and beating 1 guy.The punishment did't fit the crime, I say the should have been charged with assault and battery while the 17 should be tried as adults the 16 yearoldsshould have been tried as juvies. But what I want answer to is if it were 6 white guys jumping and beating 1 black guy I wonder the outcome of that. I'm sure they would have been persecuted for a hate crime.

I know I acknowledged the fact that he was badly hurt but the injustices in the situation should not be ignored. Remember, there wasn't a call for the release of the students, there was a call for a fair sentence!

the original punishment did not fit the crime -- when we were kids we got it to fights i received ten times more black eyes than i passed out -- but no one went to jail -- the community felt the punishment was excessive and the voice their opinion about it!!!

i think they are outrage because the punishment was harshier than what they gave the white kid.
