I am starting a metal band, and i have been looking online for a good microphone for vocals. I just need a basic mic with a stand, and i have found that. I don't know much about mics..would i need a PA system to go along with the mic or can i just plug it into a normal amp? Because i have an amp for my electric guitar. I am a bit lost when it comes to that, so if someone could explain to me what microphones normally hook up to, that would be nice.

The standard stage vocal microphone is the Shure SM-57. It is very rugged (i.e. it can be dropped over and over) and sounds accurate enough for concert/stage work (but I would not use it in a studio). They run about $100 each. Even if you don't get the SM-57, be sure and get a dynamic microphone and not a condenser microphone because the first time you drop a condenser microphone, it is 'toast'.

You should not run a vocal signal into a guitar amplifier, because a guitar amp and guitar speakers are designed specifically for guitars and not voice (to tell you all the details of why this is, would take too much of this Y!Answer). You should really get a separate PA system for vocals. The PA mixer should have good microphone pre-amps, too.

The power output of the PA and the PA speakers should be sized for your intended venues. For small clubs and bars, 200-500 Watts will probably be sufficient.

the sm58 is better for vocals... and its a rugged mic, but I wouldn't go as far as to say you can drop it again and again. drop em once, okay, twice....ehhhh not the best idea, bang it into a roadcase, not so bad.... but eventually if you don't take care of your mics there will be a significant drop in quality. the sm57 is better for instrument recording and amps micing. they are both the same price. and yes you would need a pa system.
