Can anybody point me to the best site(s) for comparing the various brands available?

How are they for overnight use? For poopsplosions?

Your recommendations for particular kinds are welcome; my only fussiness right now is that I cannot stand polyester fleece, which seems to be on a lot of cloth diapers. If you like a brand without, tell me!

Had I had enough sleep -- you know of what I speak -- I'm sure I would've found a better term than 'poopsplosion'...

diaperpin.com is great! Thanks!

I loved organic hemp DSQ diapers and regular DSQ diapers. For night use, I never had a problem with them. When the girls got older, I did double up sometimes. I love this website http://www.cloth-diaper.com/dsq.asp for information, but I did buy a lot of diapers from my local diaper service. I had much better luck with cloth diapers for blowouts than I ever did with disposables!

Bravo -- cloth is the way to go. My children were allergic to disposable diapers and I had no choice but to go with cloth diapers. I just used the ones that were for sale at the time and folded them for better absorbency. Back in the day, I didn't use any special detergents, but I did wash them twice, in hot water and put them through an extra rinse cycle. The first wash was a good soak, the second wash to get them clean, and the extra rinse to make sure all residue was gone. When the weather permitted, I would hang them on the clothes line. That seemed to make them much more absorbent. I also never used fabric softener -- that will prevent the diapers from being absorbent. I must warn you though, buy (or make) twice as many as you think you'll need -- maybe even triple it to be on the safe side. When my daughter was expecting her first child, I did some research into cloth diapers -- I was so afraid that he would be allergic like his mother was as a child. Thankfully, he isn't -- but I was amazed to discover all the wonderful products available for moms who choose cloth. There are diaper inserts that help pull the urine completely away from the skin, and they are washable and reusable. All natural, too. Way back when I used cloth with my babies, I still used disposables for trips and such. Found out soon enough how much trouble cloth diapers are to use when away from home. You will enjoy cloth diapers -- I agree with you that they are better for baby's skin. They are more work and effort, but well worth it in the long run.

Here is a link that lists the various cloth diaper styles and pros and con for each:
http://www.nurtured.ca/Scripts/openExtra.asp?extra=6

http://www.nutured.ca is a Canadian site, mother-owned and operated and offers environmental and sustainable products. I've purchased from her and she's very knowledgeable (and some might say remarkably enthusiastic) about cloth diapering and helpful. If you're considering a purchase, she would be a great resource and I would recommend her site.

Well, I mostly used unbleached prefolds and Bummis Super whisper wrap covers until i discovered thejoy of fitteds like those at http://www.zoombabygear.com They NEVER leak. and although I really like fleece pants as a cover, you can buy or make really great wool ones (old felted wool sweaters resewn and relanolized with that stuff they give you for nipple cream), or just use PUL like the aforementioned Bummis. This system help immensely with potty leanring, as the fitteds fit more like underpants on an older babe.

I also loooove Happy heinys, but they have fleece linings. They absolutley rock for times when you don't want wetness against the skin, like overnight!

As far as web resources mothering.com has a great diapering board and http://www.diaperpin.com is awesome, if a little overwhelming ;-)

i agree that hemp is the way to go.....and poly fleece is crap for diaper covers.....it seems to popular simply because it's readily available, cheap and comes in cute prints

i love my hemp growing greens and crickett's

they are fitted hemp/cotton blend......durable, ABSORBANT, antimicrobial

hemp actually gets better with time....my babe's dipes just keep getting more absorbant

this morning we woke up to get ready to start our day....she was dry after sleeping all night.....so i didn't change her.....then another hour and half went by and she still seemed dry.....(she didn't have a cover on at the time)

i went to change her clothes to leave the house and she was still seemingly dry!...i opened up her diaper anyway and it was wet on the inside but not on the outside.....how great is that!?

i made my own covers out of PUL fabric......but if you are not into sewing then covers can be purchased from any cloth diaper site along with wetbags and all that

good luck and i love cloth diapers......they go to daycare and there are no problems......all the girls that work there are all like "wow these are cool, i have never seen diapers like this, where did you get these, do you like them?" etc.

I used plain, Chinese double-folds. They were thick enough to absorb a lot (especially the older they got) and fit all sizes of my babies. I used Alexis nylon covers, cheap and waterproof. I also used Kushie flushable liners to help catch the poop and reduce poop stains on the diapers.

Overnight success varied according to the child, but I usually had to change at least one diaper in the middle of the night, sometimes two.

Only my son ever had enormous poop explosions fairly often. I used to fold down an inch of the back edge of the diaper to help catch them, and the more snug the cover was, the better it all held.

I had one fleece cover that I was okay, but it was too expensive to purchase a whole fleet of them for every size. I got by with 4 Alexis nylon covers in each size, and they lasted for all three of my kids....well, the middle one didn't have cloth diapers for long, because I got pregnant when she was 9 months old and after morning sickness set in, I wasn't able to deal with the dirty diapers & laundering them like I needed to, so I switched to disposables.

I ordered my sons cloth diapers from Green Mountain Diapers. They have a pretty decent selection and the ones I used didn't have any polyester in them. I used cloth on my son at night, and I had no trouble, even with "poopsplosions".

If you don't like Fleece diaper covers, you can always use wool diaper covers! They are breathable, all-natural, waterproof, and somewhat antimicrobial. You have to hand wash them normally but you can use them several times before they get stinky or anything (unless you've had a leaking poopy incident!).

Diaper pin is GREAT for reviews! Overnight I use prefolds with a doubler and a wool cover/longies for my little guy, and a double stuffed Fuzzi Bunz for my big(ger) guy. We haven't had any problems since figuring those out. We have also had FAR fewer explosions out of cloth than we had to deal with in sposies.
