since starting high-school it's been quite a shock to discover that i'm not really good at anything, and am especially bad in maths, and physics...well, pretty much everything. is there a way to "improve" my IQ or am i stuck 2 being dumb all my life. i try 2 study, and always pay attention in class but u can't really learn maths by heart. i'm afraid i'll become a nerd to compensate my lack of intelligence...what can i do become smarter??

Stop memorizing anything involving science. Sure, you need to know the vocab and certain formulas, but aside from that you need to begin working on concept rather than memorization.

In english and history you are supposed to memorize the information and then recall it for a test. In mathematics and physics you are to learn how to use concepts to solve problems. For example, if they say 2x=4, do not look at that problem and think "okay, in this one i am supposed to divide by the one by X." That is using memorization! Rather look at it this way, "hmm... how can i get X alone? If i divide 4 by two, the problem will read x=4/2 or x=2."

Just remember always, it is a different kind of thinking than literary work. So, always teach yourself to look at a problem and figure out what needs to be done to isolate x, or find the speed of a car, rather than trying to match it with a problem you've done in the book. You can have a teacher help you with this new kind of thinking to get you started and who knows, maybe you'll take off. You could memorize every problem in a calculus book and still not have a clue what you're doing as soon as a few things are changed in a problem.

So, good luck, hope this helps.

I am a very lucky man I am now 40 something and growing up in the 1960s I had Horrible IQ test scores and was always borderline special education. Between the discovery of my Splinter skill Ability and my Dyslexia I came out pretty well. I did even better when in my 20s I figured out most of my Odd Autism Thought process, a thought process that has never been in a book before.

You might indeed have a certain range of IQ but as others have said you can always look and create new ways to solve problems and do well even if your test numbers tell you no. For the record I have never passed College chemistry despite trying it four times but I just do other things I'm good at. I guess my IQ was really right after all (89) but again don't let that stop you odds are you good at other things- just discover them!

Dee,

An IQ test is merely a representation of your ability to solve problems that "equates" to an overall IQ score. Math and Physics have nothing to do with IQ. Many people don't know the slightest about math, science, or current events but do just fine on an IQ test. The best way to become "smarter" is to read the paper, books, listen to INFORMATIONAL radio, get a tutor.

I believe in the theories that we aren't born with a certain level of intelligence.. rather a range of possibility. In other words there is a limit to how intelligent you can become... but you can improve to that point... and I highly doubt you have maxed it out yet.

Just read, practice, do your homework and find out what your learning style is for the subjects you are having trouble with and then find the best ways for you to study and learn them (your highschool counselor can help you with all of that)

It will take some time and some effort.. but you can make yourself smarter.

It is how you apply the intelligence that you already posess that counts.
