It comes straight from the authoritative father's hip, thus the term: 'he shoots straight from the hip'

This is a good question. Having been the victim of my father's beltings when I was a little girl, I do not believe that assaulting (hitting) a child with a hand or weapon (yes, it IS a weapon, not an implement) is anything other than child abuse. I have never had to spank any of my children. So they have not grown up believing that violence is acceptable. There are other ways to teach them to behave.

It's the most commonly accessible thing in all locations. If you're wearing pants, there's a chance you have a belt.

If wallets were effective, they might get used too.

Weapon? beating?.........I've been on both ends of this weapon as you call it, If you disipline a child with a belt that is a far cry from a "beating." The last time I whipped one of my sons. He was 14, had just "gut shot" a neighbors dog with a Bow & Arrow he had "traded for" without my knowledge. Yes, I tore his butt up for it!! If that don't deserve one, If don't know what does..............lol

I think the idea is associated with whipping as punishment and since most men had leather belts, it was easier than buying or borrowing a whip!

my dad was fast with his belt till i was about 15 and the years of rugby and training meant our LAST lil tussle left him with all the fingers of one hand broken where i had caught a 'punch' he tried to throw and him in no doubt about how magnaminous i had been in victory! payback is soooo sweet!!! =) shame to think they get it from THEIR fathers though - all those generations of crap...wonder when they invented the belt and who was the first to incorporate it into their lil games, huh? u think Senior Caveman Ugh used a cord of bison pelt??

=)

Damn...I remember getting hit with one a few times...lol. But I don't believe in beating anyone to get a point across. Reasoning usually works best with a kid.

IMHO, I don't think children should be hit with an inanimate object. Spanked by a hand, yes. (I don't mean HARD) Hit with a belt, no.
