It is still a large block of society With dental and eye care and a great pension plan. Paid for by the rest of America.

21 million people or 16% of the employed labor force as of 2005. This does not make America socialist, but it means we have a big bureaucracy.

(I got this number from old BLS statistics -- the new website is chopped up and I can't find a more current estimate).
