Personally I enjoy murder mysteries.
If you haven't read: James Patterson and his Alex Cross series (begins with Along Came a Spider) or Women's Murder Club series (1st to Die) I would pick those up.
Or any Mary Higgins Clark book.
Or Janet Evanovich is funny/suspenseful - kind of chick lit in a way, but hey, I read them. Stephanie Plum series (One for the Money).
Romance: Nora Roberts is good.
The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver is good (not murder mystery though).
Hope I've helped.

For humor in books, I highly recommend mysteries by Elizabeth Peters and Janet Evanovich. LOL!!! For suspense try Barbara Micheals (Eliz. Peters). For black humor situated in Florida, try Carl Hiaassin. The Artemis Fowl and other young adult books by Irish author(E.C.) are interesting--author describes Artemis as the anti-Harry Potter. Also Tamora Pierce, young adult fantasy, mystery, magic. I will read just about anything myself, but NOT Stephen King--The Dead Zone was enough.

There are so many good books. If you like Stephen King, "Bag of Bones" is excellent. "The DaVinci Code" is great. I just read "The Girl's Guide to Hunting and Fishing" (It's not about actual hunting and fishing) by Melissa Bank. Marian Keyes' books are great, if you are looking for girly, fun to read and humorous books. "Watermelon", "Lucy Sullivan is getting Married", "Sushi for Beginners", "Last Chance Saloon", "Rachel's Holiday", "The Other Side of the Story" and "Angels" all by her, are great. "Jemima J" by Jane Green is another good girly book.

Have you read "Suite Francaise" by Irene Nemirovsky? It's finely translated from French by Sandra Smith, an English lady lent /suggested it to me last month, it's readable and interesting in terms of narration & characterization with good tips of thought for us in the world of any open or secret war at present. I also wrote its review for my friends to read and comment, please visit the attached website. Your comments are welcome.
