I'd imagine that it came about from the fact that the heart is red. Why the human heart is associated with love is another question entirely that I have no answer to.
Another idea is that it comes from the "warm" feeling you get when you are in love so maybe the red comes from fire (heat).

The heart is full of blood, which, when viewed, has touched air, making it red. Just a guess.
Hearts are actually a bit more brown than red though.

Because red is passion, hot, dangerous, etc etc...all of those exciting things. And Love can be the same way. My opinion anyway.

Because its a very deep color. don't you think? And I guess they associate it with blood, life, heart, death. Love is all those things.
