I would say get them something that doesn't involve money. The amount of thoughtfulness and love does not correlate with the amount of money spent on a gift.
Do they have an up-to date family portrait? If they don't, plan a day with the family to take one and pay for it and the framing.
I know for my father I'm buying him a digital photo frame and before giving it to him I will put lots of pictures of our family, places we've been and beloved family pets who have left us. The digital photo frame is just a medium that conveys the real present, the present of memories.
Treat them to a spa weekend, go searching in antique stores for an object that reminds you of childhood that you know probably has been lost.
Make a donation to charities or causes they believe in as a gift and then give them smaller personal gifts.
The only thing money can't buy is love and memories.

you could go out with a camera and take photo's of places that mean something to them, like a 1st meeting place or somewhere they like to go for eveings out - or have a really good photo of yourself and siblings if you have any write them a song and record it - if your not sure how to do that on a PC then i'm sure a mate would - then make a CD of it make a promise like "I will spend 1 hour chatting to you once a week" (this kind of present can become very hard to keep up - I have done it but it was really hard for the 1st three months) but it's nice to look forwards to it and did carry on after the year until my mother passed away hope that helps - best regards barry

How about a Christmas ornament that they can hang up?
$1000? My parents never spent that much on the whole family in one Christmas...

Perhaps you can donate money to their favorite charity in their honor? That way you give not only to them but to others less fortunate. 8:)
