Every day boatloads of people set sail from Africa trying to escape from the misery that they live in, looking for a better life.
How bad must your life be to risk crossing the sea in small rowing boats at the risk of death (many do not arrive, they arrive in their hundreds and die in their dozens)

This is a weekly scene on the shores of the Canary Islands and Southern Spain.

How unfairt is the world we are in te middle of a consumer frenzy and this is happening every day in Europe.

The other side of immigration.

THe link is in Spanish but the pictures say it all.

Let´s spare a thought.............

I´m not talking politics here, I´m trying to make a point about sheer desperation.

I do not think you deserve to be vilified for making a perfectly reasonable observation.

The pictures were pitiful, but it was interesting to note that most of the men were young. I do not necessarily believe that they put themselves through this harrowing ordeal because their own lives were so dreadful. Life in Africa is all they have known, and unless they are escaping persecution, which they may have been, they are really economic refugees. Men that were escaping famine and/or persecution would surely have had to take their families with them.

I feel that, judging from the photographs, these men were no different from the ones that congregate on the French side of the channel trying to get here.

This is not to decry the terrible situation that many Africans live in. We have poured so much money into the continent, but where has it gone? Mainly to line the pockets of dictators and war mongers who care far less about the people of Africa than we do.

But I agree with you, we should consider our own fortunate circumstances. It could so easily be us - and I can tell you,if it were, no one would help us.

yes it is a risky business sailing in one of those little boats to Europe

but Europe doesn't want them here

we have so many African illegal immigrants in Britain - we really don't want any more

harsh but true - our welfare state is a magnet to people wanting an easy life - money for nothing - so I'm sorry but they should try to make a better life for themselves in the African continent

The Mexican and south Americans crossing our southern border are in the same plight, we just don't have the dramatic pictures of their suffering.
