There's a movie version with Robin Williams. I've both read it (and other Irving novels) and seen the movie. One scene in both that sticks out and reveals the type of character Garp is, is the one where he buys a house that a plane just crashed into, saying it was predisastered, thereby making it an unlikely target for future mishaps.

Hi there.
I have just finished Garp and wasn't really impressed. I thought it fell apart about half way through, but can't go into details without spoiling the plot!

It is about the life of a leading feminist icon and her son, both of whom are authors - so it is the old chestnut of a writer writing about how hard it is to write! The book is so packed full of symbolism it has no room for real humanity and I found it very cold, very male in that sense. lots of violence and suffering too, if you like that kind of thing.
Good luck, Steve.

Garp's philosophy of life is that horrible catastrophes are bound to happen, and that any attempt to prevent them will only bring on more catastrophe. Yet he can't stop striving to care for and protect the people he loves. It's a big book, and the range of disasters that befall its characters is astounding. The comedy is pretty dark, but for such a doom-laden novel, it's surprisingly fun to read.

It's good, but I much prefer "A Prayer for Owen Meany."
