Yes a chair has to exist before you can decide whether or not it is attractive.

Yes, because the essence of something presupposes the existence of that something! Some little kaka has thumbed down my answer which is based on Sartre existentialist explanation to be added by edit. LOL Do U want to do real philosophy? or are you just being cute?

this is again that question which has been asked for about last 2500 years.
the existence which you know as the existence is in no way different from the essence. you start with presumption that the essence is the sum total of the attributes of a being.
calling the existence and the essence is merely verbal jugglery which few ancient philosophers used to make more than once.
one more thing the existence and the essence are of the same kind. you may go through my two philosophical articles at my website http://www.lightinlife.com/
the articles are "God of Contradictions" at a url
http://www.lightinlife.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=77&Itemid=105
and its sequel
"The Post Quantum God" at a url
http://www.lightinlife.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=78&Itemid=106
these two articles are purely philosophical and dispel all doubts on this subject. plz go through them.

Hello:
That would depend what we are talking about. If we are speaking of a person then they will exist prior to having an essence every time because we must choose our essence...or at least be constantly trying to choose it. Humans exist in a state of constantly becoming/unbecoming.
If we are talking about objects then if they are invented then their essence will exist prior to their literal existence because someone thought them up before they existed. Stuff like rocks and trees were around prior to our encountering them.
I hope this helps

For something to exist, it must exist as something. An object does not exist and then immediately followed by it's essence. Existence and essence are simultaneous.
In other words, essence is as essential to existence as existence is to essence.

Sometimes we make something because we already have the meaning for it planned out.
Someone doesn't make a chair for no absolute reason and then later decide it could be used for sitting.
