Hi Fluffie! And Netdisaster!

The next significant eclipse you can see from the British Isles will be this August 1st. Mid-morning that day, more than 40% of the sun's disc will be eclipsed over northern Scotland. Further south, say in London, only 20% will be covered.

Of course, you'll need more than that for a major eclipse. How about March 20, 2015! That morning, northern Scotland just misses a total eclipse of the sun. Ninety-five percent of the sun will be covered at the northern tip of Scotland. Indeed the eclipse will be total in the Faroe Islands. London will see almost 85% of the sun eclipsed.

The next total or annular eclipse you can see from the British mainland will not be until September 23, 2090, so it's probably a good idea to think about travel. Other than the Faroe Islands eclipse, the next total eclipse convenient for western Europe will be August 12, 2026 in Spain!

The only eclipses visible during the day are solar eclipses. The best solar eclipses are total or annular, but those are very rare from a particular location; from most places, you see a partial eclipse. Here are the solar eclipses visible from the UK in the next 10 years:

Aug 1 2008 (about 25% partial)
Jan 4 2011 (about 80% partial, at sunrise)
Mar 20 2015 (about 90% partial)
Aug 21 2017 (about 10% partial, at sunset)

The next total lunar eclipse from the UK is
Feb 21 2008
but this happens in the wee hours of the morning (total from 3:00 AM to 3:51 AM Universal Time).

There is a total solar eclipse in the British Isles in 2090, and an annular solar eclipse in 2093, but that's a long ways off.

The British Isles are a pretty small target. There are a couple that come close but I couldn't find any total eclipse of the Sun that had the path of totality cross the British Isles before 2060. Ans I just stopped looking after that.
