(-1) + (-2) = (-3)

negative * negative = positive
(-1) * (-2) = (+2)

negative + negative is negative

However negative * negative is positive

Let x and y be positive numbers, so (-x) and (-y) are negative numbers.
y + (-y) = 0
(-x)[y + (-y)] = 0 (anything times 0 is 0)
(-x)y + (-x)(-y) = 0 (by multiplying out the brackets)
-(xy) + (-x)(-y) = 0
(-x)(-y) = xy (add xy to both sides)
But since x and y are both positive, xy is positive, and the product of any negative numbers -x and -y is positive.
