What would you do in order for you to be "discovered"? What are the steps that you would take? You have a great art talent and can draw just about anything, except that no one knows you.

I've been working professionally for over 25 years and have reached a few conclusions. No one has to be a "starving artist" I believe that to be a choice if you have even a modicum of talent. I personally wouldn't focus on being "discovered" either - focus on your work, put it in front of as many people as you can and trust in yourself and the process. You should start networking and approaching as many galleries and dealers as you can. I found the west coast was a much easier market to break into. When I lived there I couldn't keep up with the demand and I was fresh out of college. Don't be afraid to tale a "real job" if it is even remotely related to the arts. You'll meet other creative types. I met a gallery owner who bought a lot of my work while I was working in a small studio cranking out site specific work - you know schlock that matches the furniture, Perseverance is the key as much as talent. Good luck..

I would have to agree with Alan B. If you're just starting out as an artist being "discovered" isn't as important as making a living. When you get older and are less physically able to do as much work then becoming a "known" artist can be helpful in that your work demands a higher price and you don't have to work as hard. But I have found it's more important to do what you love and the money will come.
I've been working as a professional artist for over 30-years and have never been able to find a job that pays as well as simply doing my artwork. Art fairs are a way to be seen and make money (though it has become difficult to find a quality show anymore). The best shows I've found are in the San Francisco area. The galleries are difficult to get into, it's easy to 'rip-off' an artist, high commissions, limited audience, blah-blah... You may want to enter art competitions. Winning many awards will impress the mucky-mucks and quality competitions will usually publish the artwork and names of the winners. These days it's important to have a nice professional looking website. You can view mine at : www.NancyTuttle.com
Ebay has become a great place for artists to be seen and make good money (check 'self-representing artists').
Basically learn about art marketing, persevere (work VERY HARD and OFTEN) and most importantly, enjoy creating.
Good luck.

Read your local paper and look for places that you can put up your work. Some coffee shops allow you to show your work. Libraries allow local artists to show their work, and all it takes to post it on the internet is a digital camera and computer. Take pictures of your work and make a free website at Yahoo Geocities.

Don't expect to make it big right away. That takes time and perseverence. I install satellite antennas for tvs, and yet still find the time to finsih artwork at home. Good luck to you.

it's not easy for artists.. that's where the expression "starving artist" comes from.. if it was me, I'd probably go to art dealers and see if they're interested..
