yes i sure do wish those days were still here. I like the technology we have today, but would prefer te living style that wehad in those olden days. very little crime, no traffic, no greed and no road rage, plus we all knew our neighbors.

I've still got the little cubby that Brother Otter mentions above, although the outside door is boarded over.
I've been contemplating turning it into a kitty door.
I know we used to get the milk delivered in the glass bottles, but I can't actually recall a taste difference. There may have been, but I don't recall it as vividly as I do the difference between glass and plastic Coke.
Nowadays, I often have difficulty getting through one carton of milk before the expiration date - so I'm not sure it would be worth the delivery charges to get one bottle every few weeks.
Besides, I'd probably forget it was there, and then wonder where that weird smell was coming from.

What memories this question brings up. I was raised on an Indiana farm and after the cows were milked grandpa sold it to a big milk company that came and picked it up. We didn't drink our milk because it wasn't pasteurized....therefore unsafe to drink before it had been processed. We had a milkman and besides the delicious milk we also got ice cream from him. We also had a bread-man, ice-man, coal-man ( that delivered our coal whenever grandpa called and ordered a ton or so). We also had a ' Huckster ' wagon that came twice a month. This was actually a van type truck that carried things like sugar, flour, canned foods, spices etc.,and of course candy for the kids to buy,.. most anything the farmers didn't grow or raise on their farms. We even had a Watkins man who sold all of those things like brooms, mops, cleaning supplies, spices etc. Of course the daily newspaper came with the mail but I'm guessing some of you may still get it that way. What an excellant question that was good for the soul. It brought back a lot of good things I haven't thought about in years.
Thanks.

I remember the milk bottles with the cream on the top before the days of homogenization started. We had a special scoop to skim the cream off for my parents' coffee. I also remember putting out a card for ice before we had a refrigerator. The ice box was built into the kitchen and the iceman could put in the ice from the outside. My gosh, I sure am old!
(And yes, it did taste better coming from a glass bottle.)

For some reason I think things taste better from a glass bottles. It can be milk, soda or even beer, it tastes better from a glass bottle. I do wish they were still around if only people didn't break the glass bottles in the street and sidewalk.

In 1956 we used to get 1/3rd of a bottle of milk free. We used to drink it in the playground during playtime but in the winter the cold weather would freeze the milk and the foil top would be pushed up about an inch above the rim. Nothing prepared you for the pain, in the temples, when you drank this 'frozen' milk!

When I was a kid in western Canada, we actually had a little cubby by the back door with an inside and an outside door. Put the empties in the cubby and pick up the fresh milk later in the morning. No frozen milk bottles in winter.
But I don't drink much milk anymore. It's not good for me.

I remember my mom leaving a note for the milkman like please leave butter, eggs and milk, and he would put it in the insulated metal box, when I first got married we also had a milkman and a box,but I don't think the milk tasted any better, but the convenience was worth a lot since hubby worked 2 jobs and I had 3 small toddlers to take to the store,

Oh yes. And the bakery truck, the Fuller Brush man, the Stanley guy, and the one that sold spices and extracts. All of these products were so much better than what the stores carry now. Dairy products were definitely better. Remember how butter tasted?
When I go on a cruise the ship has butter from Europe. It has more butter fat than US brands and is so GOOD. I looked it up on line and can order it for $16 a pound. I'll just have to keep betting my butter from Safeway.
